A Brief Glimpse of Life via Still Life Illustrations

A still life illustration depicts the inanimate subject in an artistic way. The art originated in the 16th century with the Graeco-Roman art and has been popular ever since. In the early stages, the artist use to depict religious symbols or other allegoric symbols. However, the still life illustration now includes a wide range of objects such as fruits, flowers, plants, shells, rocks and sometimes even the dead bodies.

The still life illustration gives the still life artist more scope to arrange the various elements as per the requirement of their composition as it is quite distinct from the portraits and landscape art. The modern day art of still life works ranges from simple art on paper to complex 2D and lively 3D illustrations that are used to produce a distinct media mix such as computer graphics and more.

The botanical illustrations are often used as fashion illustrations as well. While the dead animals works are termed as Flemish Baroque, depicting live zoological works is considered as animal art.

Still life has been popular for the still life artists are able to produce depiction of real life in still that people can relate to. It is like a slice of life that is being served on the platter of memory via the medium of canvas.

More than often, a still life work depicts an exclusive background. A still life artist normally keeps aesthetic as the primary point of appeal than the illustrative concerns. Even though this form of art occupied the lowest position in the genres’ hierarchy, yet, it is not just popular among the buyers, but widely appreciated for the distinct style of the artist as well.

Finding the Right Style with Regards to Botanical Illustrations

As soon as I look back to the collection associated with the past illustrations related to botany, the memories related to entomology and other concepts engulf me. The working process along with evolution of the styles in relation to illustration that changed over time has been a good journey.

Weekly Practices Regarding Botanical Illustrations

While creating some of the best botanical illustrations, artists prefer weekly practices. In short, it is kind of personal ritual. The discipline associated along with time required has been valuable in creating some cherished and detailed illustrations.

Styles Adopted by Botanical illustration Artists

Most of the devoted botanical illustration artists lose the sense of time after being involved with the drawing board but the art they come up with is simply mesmerizing.

ALICIA MALESANI: Her botanical illustrations are inspired by the floral fragrances and are more appealing as label deigns of bottled fragrance.

AMELIE HEGARDT AND CECILIA LUNDGREN: Amelie and Cecilia prefer to create botanical illustrations that represent a wallpaper design and bring the walls come alive. Their designs are equally good on fabric as well.

IZAK ZENOU: He loves to play with colors but at the same time, the simplicity of choice of one or two colors for a dense illustration makes his art talk to you.

WENDY PLOVMAND: Her botanical illustrations are not just colorful but have a sense of darkness to them as well. She prefers to use a lot of black and the contrast of black on while canvas makes her art intense and interesting.

The Stunning Magic of Botanical Art Speaks

People are often very inquisitive about botanical painting. Questions are often asked about how it is done and the difference between normal painting and botanical illustrations. If considered in the simplest way, botanical painting mainly involves arranging flower on paper. It is not in any way related to the paintings that you normally see.

What is it?

For those who are very interested about flowers, they can easily become botanical illustrations artists. However, you must have a good eye for the composition and color, proportion and balance. Arrangement of the flowers should be such that they would look unique. In order to get this idea, you need to have necessary technical knowledge. Amongst everything else, you must have dedication and patience. Overall, the primary intention of botanical art is conveying information about plants and trees. But, a botanical artist should also have an equal eye to the aesthetic part of this art form. With the help of design and detail, line, form and color, the artists tries to communicate emotions to the viewer. This takes a lot of time and that is why it is considered a very time consuming art form unlike the others. In the words of Sir Roy Strong, botanical art is “creation that is constantly amazing us”. He is one of the pioneers in this art form. According to Hokusai, a Japanese botanical artist, this art “penetrates the mystery of various things” making it unique and everlasting.

An enticing thing about botanical art is the fact that you need not have a good hand in painting just like other art forms, but if you have a good eye, then you can be the best from the rest. This is quite fascinating because the concept has been present since centuries and it is time that artists start taking it up as a mainstream form of art.
