How to Choose Right an Artist's Representative

At some point in your career you people will approach you and offer to be your artist management agency or illustration representation. Some may work purely on commission on any work sold for “representing" you and your work. Others may charge a fee for their services.
However, when you are exhibiting in established venues and when your art begins to sell regularly, with steady price increases you will notice that you attract interest from people who are eager to participate in your career success.

To the answer most frequently asked by artists, “How do I find an agent?” My response is usually, “Keep showing your work, and eventually they will find you.”

Here are 16 topics you should consider before making your decision:

1.) What are their fees?
2.) Who are the parties involved?
3.) What is this person's background?
4.) What art-related professional experience do they have?
5.) How do they talk about your art?
6.) What is the scope of the representation?
7.) How will they inform you of their progress?
8.) Does the “artist’s representative” have conflicts of interest?
9.) What art venues do they offer?
10.) What business contacts do they have?
11.) What other artists / art do they represent?
12.) Will they rely only on your contacts?
13.) How will they pursue new opportunities?
14.) What are their marketing and promotion strategies?
15.) Will the person release any marketing and promotional materials on your behalf?
16.) What insurance protection do they provide?

What is Environmental Art and Portfolio of best environmental artists

What is Environmental Art:

In a general sense, it is art that helps improve our relationship with the natural world. There is no definition set in stone. This living worldwide movement is growing and changing as you read this.

The three strands of environmental arts that I propose are as follows:
  • Art which observes and interacts with the (usually natural) environment.
  • Art which reclaims or improves physical environments in the tangible sense.
  • Art which engages with the social environment with pedagogical and/or activist intent

How do I find an illustrator Agent and Rep?

Research is the key to finding the right Agent or Rep that’s right for you.

There are many agencies out there and you would like to search out the proper one for you

The relationship between an Illustrator and an Agent is a special one and not everyone is suited for each other.

Do your research and source out the ones that you feel would be an honest match with you and your vogue..

Search on Google, Bing and Yahoo

Most illustrators have websites with a variety of their best work. If you’re looking for an illustrator that lives or creative works near you, you can try narrowing your search by adding your location to your search query. (e.g ‘illustrator in New York’). You can also try to narrow down your search based on style (e.g botanical, children, environmental, instruction, still life, Food and etc..)

Online Illustration directories

Another way of finding illustrators is to seem through an illustration directory. These are print and online listings that illustrators pay to be included in. There is no charge to you because the consumer, to seem through these directories.

Agents

Illustration agents represent multiple illustrators in their agency. Agent’s commands a premium, but can offer added peace of mind to a client by helping to project manage the illustrator. Additionally, an agent can help narrow your search by recommending illustrators to you, or suggesting a suitable replacement if your preferred illustrator is not available. (e.g: Traffic Creative Management, good illustration agent in New York)

Social Media

Social media is a great way to discover talent. Facebook, Tumblr, Pinterest and Instagram are great to check out as illustrator’s agency upload new work there. LinkedIn is a personal favorite for me as well as I use it to make contact with other professionals.
